Chicago Christmas Traditions

While not really a Chicago tradition, I've walked into this building almost every week day for the past quarter of a century :)

They do a lovely job of decorating for the holiday.

Most Chicagoans make at least one stop here during the holiday season:

Macy's on State Street (formerly Marshall Field's)
You must stop to see the windows and then head up to the 7th floor to see the Great Tree.

I wasn't a big fan of it this year.

At the base of the tree is the Walnut Room Restaurant.
My grandparents would bring me here when I was small after visiting Santa and we took our boys for years. We have quite the collection of Santabear souvenir mugs from our meals there.

Then it's time to head two block west to my favorite tradition - the Christkindlmarket
About 80% of the booths and their staff are direct from Germany.
On Christmas Eve, it closes and they head back home...

The city's official tree sparkles with lights!

The German glass ornament houses are wonderful!

As are the incredible wooden creations.

The details and workmanship are amazing!

Of course I always have to peek at the Nutcrackers.

The colors on these are so vibrant!

The candleholders always catch my eye.
This year one came home with me:

By day it is pretty, but not too exciting, but once the sun sets and the candle is lit:

It comes alive in surprising depth!

The picture below is not behaving,
but I found an ornament that had to come home with me

How could I resist the Wrigley Building?!
My home away from home :)

The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
~Luke 2:20

Blessings, Patti

Oh, My God! That market is incredible!!! I don't think we have anything like that in NYC. :O I want one of everything! And more than one nutcracker! Are they actually German-made??? <3

What great pics.
Love the candleholder, how unique.
I remember going downtown Milwaukee with my Aunt and looking at the animated scenes in Boston Store's windows.
Then we would go to the Gas Company for a piece of Holly.
What great memories.
Thanks for sharing.

I have always wanted to see that German Christmas Market! I bet it is spectacular! Your candle dome is magical! Can't believe I went all the way to Chicago and didn't get to "Marshal Fields" (Macy's)!!!
Have a Happy New Year!

Patti, your pictures are beautiful! When is the best time to go to the Christmas market? Where is the best place to stay to be near it all?
We always went to Nuernberg Christkindlmarkt when we were stationed in Germany.
Happy New Year!

Beautiful pictures of Chicago. DH and I were just there in late November (he was attending a conference for work) and we got to see the Macy's all "decked out".

I also got to have lunch with an internet stitching buddy just under "The Bean".

I was in Chicago once several years ago and loved the architecture, food, events; your pics make me think that a trip there would be fun to consider during the holidays. Thanks for sharing; just love it!

funny, those are my traditions too! altho the wait this year to get a pager was incredibly long and wound around the store!! we did take a pic of the tree (we were disappointed too). had so much fun at christkindlmarkt even tho it was raining the whole time. the mulled wine helped!

Love the pics of the Christmas market! I wish I could have gotten to more this year - I was only able to get to the one at Love Park here in Philly, and wanted to get to a couple in NYC, too, but never made it up there.

That candle holder is gorgeous! I've never seen anything like it.

I've been to the Chicago area often for business, but never into the actual city - maybe next year I can visit at Christmas and see Macy's and the market!

Such a lovely Christmas tour - thank you! I've been to Chicago only briefly in my time but have plans for a longer visit in the next year or two - maybe it should be around Christmas time. The Christmas market looks amazing.
